An Advice To Be A Good Learner

Well, tonight I really want to express a thought which is really interesting to be discussed.

I attended a culture class this morning. It was good, the prof gave the students some materials and some knowledge about the culture, the history, etc. even the advices to reply some questions in a good way. Beside that, I don't really like the way how my prof asked us to be a good learner. The prof asked us to think that we're nothing, the prof even explained it that if we think zero or nothing, we'll have some spirit or some desire to be a good learner. But is it something good to encourage the students to get some good attitude and also to be a good students?
I don't know much exactly about those kinds of education theories instead I'm a teacher-wannabe, but I think that, that thought isn't a good way to say to the students. What I learned in some kind of text about education that, the teacher should give the students some motivations to have some spirit to work their homework, also if they have some personal problems/some problems with some lessons, what the teacher should do is to try to solve their problems and try to make some cooperation with the student so the class will going well. The cooperation that I want to tell you is like some good communication between teacher and student.
